Easy Homemade Play Dough Recipe for Creative Kids

HELLO

Easiest Play Dough You’ll Ever Make

In our home, creativity doesn’t have to be complicated or Pinterest-perfect. Sometimes it looks like flour on the counter, food coloring on little fingers, and laughter coming from the kitchen table. I love simple, intentional activities that invite imagination without adding stress. And this homemade play dough is exactly that.

It’s inexpensive, made from pantry staples, and turns an ordinary afternoon into something memorable. For me, this is what intentional home life looks like: slowing down, creating together, and choosing simple moments that matter.

This recipe is simple, budget-friendly, and makes a generous batch, perfect for siblings, play dates, or just not having to hear “Mom, it’s all dried out” tomorrow.

NOW LET’S MAKE SOMETHING

soft, squishy, and better than store bought…..

Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 cups salt
  • 8 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 4 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Food coloring of choice

This makes a large batch, so feel free to divide it and color it differently for multiple shades.

Directions

Step 1: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large pot, combine:

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Cream of tartar

Whisk or stir until evenly mixed.

Step 2: Add the Liquids

Add:

  • 4 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Food coloring

Mix thoroughly before turning on the heat. You want everything well combined so there aren’t streaks of dry flour hiding at the bottom.

Step 3: Cook (and stir)

Place the pot over high heat.

Now here’s the important part: stir constantly.

The mixture will start out thin, then thicken quickly. It will stick to the sides of the pot and become heavy — this is normal. Use a sturdy spoon or spatula and keep going.

Continue stirring until:

  • It forms a large ball
  • There are no “wet” spots left
  • Everything looks fully combined

Once it comes together into a thick dough ball, remove it from heat.

Step 4: Cool + Knead

Transfer the dough onto your counter top (you can lightly flour the surface if needed).

Let it cool just enough to safely touch.

Then knead it thoroughly.
And then knead it again.

This step is key to getting that smooth, soft texture that makes this recipe better than store bought.

Step 5: Store

Allow the dough to cool completely.

Store in an airtight or covered container to keep it soft and ready for the next creative moment.

Why I Love This Recipe

  • It makes a big batch
  • It’s incredibly soft and smooth
  • It holds up beautifully over time
  • It’s simple pantry ingredients

Perfect for rainy days, school breaks, play dates, or just keeping little hands busy while you make dinner.
